January 1st could be just another day on the Gregorian calendar and many choose to see it as just that, another day. But there are far more people who choose to give the day a lot of significance. To many, it’s a chance to start again, to have a do-over and to begin something new. New year’s resolutions are what they make.
Why make a resolution at all?
New Year’s Day isn’t only a time for changing all that’s bad about your self but also a time to reflect on the past year. What went wrong, what went well and all the moments in between. It is when you contemplate your life in a proper and planned manner that things can be changed for the better. So what are some of the most popular new year’s resolutions made around the world? Nearly all of them will include attempts to improve upon their physical and mental well-being. Goals such as losing weight, working out more, eating right, quitting smoking or drinking and so on.
How can you stick to your resolutions?
The goal to sticking to these resolutions is to start small. Habits begin slowly and over time. Just as you didn’t pick up a bad habit overnight, you won’t be able to lose it or build a new habit overnight as well. If the goal is to work out more, aim to visit the gym twice a week for a month before moving it up to three times a week the next month and so on.
It is also wise to start one goal at a time. This not only helps you focus your attention and effort into achieving just that one goal but also keeps you from getting overwhelmed by all that you need to accomplish at any given moment. Once you feel you’ve made enough progress on a certain goal and can maintain it, move onto the next. If in case you are not able to keep up with your resolutions, do not beat yourself up about it. Being perfect is not the goal here and making small errors or missteps is completely normal and expected. No one is perfect after all.
Accountability through people and services
Encourage yourself by holding yourself accountable for your actions and resolutions. You can do this by talking about your resolutions and goals to a family member, friend or anyone you feel can check up on your progress. This makes you accountable for your goals as if you are not focusing enough on them, you will have someone else remind you to follow them.
