A Pediatric Dentist Explains Which Foods Cause Harm

A Pediatric Dentist Explains Which Foods Cause Harm

Jul 15 2019 By Dr. Lana Al Habash - Specialist Paediatric Dentist

Brushing your teeth and flossing is beneficial for you and your family; however, children tend to eat a lot of harmful foods. Kids love sugary foods and drinks that can cause decay and gum disease. Poor dental hygiene causes plague which coats the teeth. When your child eats starch and sugars, the plaque in the mouth produces harmful acids which damage the teeth. It is necessary to visit a pediatric clinic for regular checkups for the prevention and treatment of dental problems.

Dubai pediatric dentists try to educate both the parent and children on proper dental practices and hygiene. Experts believe that regular snacking and refusal to brush teeth is the leading cause of dental diseases among children. Regular checkup helps to detect gum diseases because there are no symptoms until the late stages. Tooth decay can start as soon as the first teeth sprout; that is why you need a pediatric dentist you can trust.

Symptoms of Damaged Teeth

Sometimes, it can be challenging to notice the changes in your child’s teeth. The first sign you should look out for is change in structure. Consult your pediatric dentist as soon as you notice white spots on your child’s teeth. Visiting a dental clinic at this early stage, allows the physician to administer treatment before the problem takes root. The doctor will place fluoride vanish over the enamel to prevent further damage and help to rebuild the teeth.

Black or brown spots could be an indication of decay. You should rush to a dental clinic as soon as notice bleeding gums, irritability, or bad breath. Tooth decay can eat through the enamel and cause abscess and infection.  Visiting a pediatric dentist regularly is necessary because if your child’s teeth break because of cavities, permanent teeth might not take their place.

A Pediatric Dentist’s Advice on the Foods to Avoid

Eating sweets and snacks occasionally might not be bad for you as long as you remember to brush and floss. Below are foods that cause harm to your teeth:

Sticky Sweets

If you cannot keep your kids away from candy, ensure that you give them non-sticky ones which clear away from the mouth. Sweets are the leading cause of tooth decay, especially in children. Sugar in the candy combines with bacteria in the mouth, therefore, producing acid that burns through the enamel. This is why your pediatric dentist will remind you to help your kid to brush his teeth after meals, or at least twice a day.

If your child forgets to brush, the food particles turn to plaque which hardens on the teeth and promotes cavities. Visiting a dental clinic regularly is beneficial because the physician can detect these problems early.

Carbonated Drinks

Soft drinks have a lot of refined sugars, which cause a lot of tooth damage because also contain citric and phosphoric acids which eat through the enamel. Prolonged consumption of carbonated drinks can cause permanent damage to teeth. This can cause you endless trips to your pediatric dentist.

You can also consult a dental clinic where they provide a GP doctor who can check on your child from home after clinic hours. The good thing about this is that these physicians work 24/7, and they provide similar services to those of a health facility.

Carbonated drinks such as fruit juice, sodas, and sports drinks all contain a certain amount of acid for preservation. You might wonder why your pediatric doctor recommends that your child waits an hour before brushing the teeth after drinking a soda. This is because the acid in the drink softens the outer surface of the teeth and brushing can cause further damage. Rinsing with plain water is safer. After this, the teeth are safe for brushing.  Ensure that your child uses a straw whenever he drinks carbonated drinks to avoid contact with teeth.

Some fruit juices claim to be 100% natural with no added preservatives, but that is not always the case. Refined sugars improve the taste, while acid preserves the drink. Homemade fruit juices are healthier compared to the store bought.

Starchy Foods

Starchy foods that stick to your teeth are harmful if you don’t brush such foods include soft bread and crisps. Your pediatric dentist might advise you to help your child to brush his teeth because kids can be in a hurry and miss some spots. When foods get stuck between teeth, they attract bacteria which produce harmful acid that corrodes the teeth. It is advisable to visit a dental clinic as soon as you notice any changes in your kid’s teeth.

Ice

A glass of lemonade is refreshing on a hot day; however, if you choose to put ice in your kid’s drink, ensure that they don’t chew. Ice is made of water and water cannot damage teeth; however, ice is hard, and it could cause the enamel to break. A cracked tooth can cause you to visit a dental clinic to assess the damage. Your pediatric dentist can treat any damages caused by chewing ice; for instance, broken teeth and gum injuries. The physician can recommend different ways to cool down like letting the ice cube melt in your mouth.

Citrus Fruits

Fruits are nutritious and necessary for healthy bodies. Citrus fruits are an excellent source of Vitamin C and other nutrients necessary for healthy growth. Many physicians and even your pediatric dentist agree that some citrus fruits such as grapefruit have high levels of vitamin C, which can erode tooth enamel. Eating these fruits occasionally is healthy; however, you should avoid regular consumption. The more acid the food, the more danger it poses for your kid’s enamel. Cantaloupes, oranges, bananas, and watermelons are excellent alternatives to highly acidic fruits like lemons. Visit a dental clinic for advice on other fruits that do not corrode the teeth.

Sometimes, parents leave their kids to take care of their dental hygiene, which in turn leads to poor dental hygiene and health. Children don’t know what right or wrong when it comes to foods; this is why parents need to be involved in their children’s daily routines to maintain healthy teeth. Regular visits to your pediatric dentist help to detect diseases in their early stages.
